11:01pm
attack. that's israel's largest city. >> right now we have almost 5 million israelis in bomb shelters and they're picking and choosing cities and they're firing at major cities incding our capital. so in the u.s. states terms it would be like firing at chicago, washington d.c., new york, los angeles one day after next. >> reporter: the u.s. is ready to help our ally israel, but wants this resolved by the two parties involved. some are looking to egypt to be a possible mediator wondering if egypt will be able to pressure hamas to back off as president hosni mubarak used to do. today the egyptian prime minister went into gaza trying to organize some kind of ceasefire. clearly it didn't work. inside israel three people died when a missile hit their home. talk about living in fear, this tel aviv couple forced to take wedding pictures outside a bomb shelter. in gaza city israel's airstrikes continue pounding
11:02pm
away at militants themselves, weapons facilities and missile launching sites. for the first time both the israeli army and hamas have taken to twitter threatening one another. israelis are tweeting no hamas leader better show his face above ground. hamas is saying any more air attacks, we're going to hit more populated israeli targets. bottom line, the u.s. says israel has the right to self- defense. meanwhile we're wrapping up a long bizarre week for former cia chief david petraeus. his sex scandal took a back seat today to the benghazi investigation. petraeus spent hours on capitol hill testifying about the attack on the u.s. consulate in september. he said he believed it was an act of terror from the start. lawmakers still have a lot of questions. disgusting and inappropriate is what police officials in prince george's county are saying about an internet video two officers appeared in. now those cops are off the job.
11:03pm
audrey barnes has this story. >> that video was posted on youtube november 1st. internal affairs got an anonymous tip about it this morning. it's down now and investigators are trying to fine it out what compelled the officers to appear in the video choosing a painful topic for police and black motorists. >> i believe it was a spoof on driving while black. >> chief mark magaw says two 5th district patrol officers starred in it wearing county uniforms driving a county police cruiser. in a simulated traffic stop the two officers who are black pull over a black actor who asked them to appear in the youtube video. >> there's nothing funny about this video. it goes against the values of this community and this police department. >> magaw says the officers are suspended with pay. their future with the department is up in the air. >> it's very unfortunate that the tape even existed and surfaced at this point in time. >> the chief says doesn't know
11:04pm
why the officers agreed to appear in the video, but he says it appears it may have been orchestrated by the specifically for youtube. magaw says the officer's tenure on the force, one was 10 years and the other three, could be fired depending on the outcome of the investigation. in virginia a former potomac schoolteacher has been arrested accused of sexually abusing students. 73-year-old christopher cloman is charged with three counts of indecency. the assaults happened years ago but it wasn't until last year one of the victims came forward. >> we were notified of this back in november of 2011 where our first victim saw christopher coleman teaching and she notified the authorities. through them they contacted us that she had been molested when she was a child. >> police say gloman taught
11:05pm
students in maryland and believes there may be more victims. if you have any more information, you're urged to call crime stoppers. d.c. calls for changes in the statute of limitations on sex crimes after dna evidence identified at least two alleged rapists who cannot be prosecuted because of the law, one man arrested last week for rape in 1999. charges were dropped. fox 5's paul wagner with the details. >> would you have -- >> reporter: late this afternoon fox 5 spoke by phone with a woman who was attacked by a stranger along this stretch of ninth street northwest in february of 1999. she says police reinterviewed her last month after telling her of the dna connection. >> they told me that they got dna off my clothes and they would notify me when they picked him up and let me know if i would be going to court. >> but the call never came and instead the victim says she
11:06pm
heard only from fox 5 who told her the charges had been dropped. >> reporter: so i'm the only person to let you know what's happening in in case at this point? >> yes. >> february 17th, 1999, the victim told police she was working at what was then the 199 nine club as an exotic dancer. she left the club around 3 a.m. and headed down this sidewalk to her car which was parked in this neighborhood somewhere. she told the police a man came from behind and stuck a black gun in her back, forced her to the ground and raped her. according to the affidavit, the woman told police that after the assault the attacker told her, "you got what you deserve." the woman says she had seen a man who matched the description of her attacker inside the club that night, but she couldn't remember his face. court records show dna from the assault was entered into the national dna date bank in 2000 and matched with the suspect's
11:07pm
dna after he was arrested in a 2009 drug conspiracy and ordered to give up his dna. u.s. attorney ron machen released this statement reading in part, "the emergence of dna technology has given us new tools to solve brutal assaults from many years ago and we should take advantage of those tools to hold criminals accountable. we urge once again the d.c. council to act promptly to remove these artificial barriers to prosecution so that rapists do not get away with their crimes." a request ward 3 council member mary cheh says deserves another look. >> i think we should take a look at it. obviously wed have to be careful to what crimes, how much longer shall we have the statute of limitations, but it's certainly something we should look at. >> but for the woman raped in 1999 it looks as if the prosecution is gone forever. >> i was mad because they made
11:08pm
me try to remember everything that happened back then and no justice was served. i suffer panic attacks. i have mental mood problems because of what happened from me having to bring this back up. i didn'tunderstand. if nothing was going to be done, why did they bring this back up? >> the woman told us she was prepared to testify in court if the case ever made it this far and knowing what she knows now she wished the police had never told her aut the dna keck. in the fox 5 newsroom, i'm -- connection. in the fox 5 newsroom i'm paul wagner. coming up why the commute in virginia may be a plot easier next week. -- lot easier next week. >> not even the classic commercials can save most he is, why union members were -- hostess, why union members were unwilling to back down coming up next. p risis

11:11pm
every spaceman knows you just got to have hostess twinkies along. even space girls know it. >> a classic american treat has been hit with a bitter dose of
11:12pm
current economic reality. hostess going out of business blaming a recent union strike. fox's doug mckelway looks at what appears to be the end of twinkies and wonder bread. >> winky the kid to the rescue. >> thanks, twinkie. >> reporter: neither twinkie the kid nor last ditch negotiations could save hostess which announced on its website today hostess brands is closed. the company said it is suspending operations at all the mans and putting 18,000 employees -- plants and putting 18,000 employees out of work. buyers lined up at a denver plant today for a last chance to buy the baked goods, hostess' ceo put blame squarely on the strike by the bakers union. >> the leadership threatened to fine them if they crossed the picket lines. we've had a number of them cross their own lines this week. >> reporter: earlier this week even as hostess closed three plants the bakers union remained defiant saying in a statement its members were not willing to take draconian wage and benefit cuts on top of the
11:13pm
significant concessions made in 2004 and give up their pensions so that the wall street vulture capitalist in control of this company can walk away with millions of dollars. last spring the wall street journal cataloged how hostess' acquisition of bakeries around the company saddled it with cumbersome obligations, 40 pension plans, 5,500 delivery routes, a system so inefficient bread truck drivers were sometimes prohibited from carrying twinkies and twinkie drivers banned from carrying bread. >> unions can survive an industry that have monopolies where they earn high profits like utilities, for example, but unions just crush companies that are in very competitive industries like the food industry. >> reporter: another company may buy out hostess and continue producing its goods, but one entrepreneur is not banking on that. he's auctions off a 10 pack of the last twinkies on ebay for $100. doug mckelway, fox news. another classic snack get a
11:14pm
makeover and some healthcare groups are not happy about it. shawn yancy has your fox 5 top five. >> we begin with concerns about a new energy boosting snack. no. 5, this isn't the cracker jacks you ate as a child. instead it's called cracker jack and it will have added caffiene. a nonprofit healthcare group wants the government to crack down before similar products are made they say putting children at risk. the makers insist the snack will not be marketed to children. no. 4, losing weight might help you get a better night's sleep. a study finds losing weight can help people get a better night's sleep whether through diet or diet and exercise. no. 3, most american workers can expect a 3% raise in 2013, slightly higher than last year. compensation experts say 3% raises are the new normal and they likely won't get higher until the economy and labor market grow. no. 2, there is a new way to enjoy nightlife in the district. the d.c. hopper is a shuttle
11:15pm
that looks like a party bus with no alcohol. it takes riders around. it costs 10 to $15 each way. the shuttles run every 30 minutes fridays and saturdays from 9:30 p.m. to 3:15 a.m. >> no. 1 tonight, after five years of construction the new express lanes of the beltway are open to those willing to pay up. you need an ez pass or ez pass flex and that's tonight's fox 5 top five. cruising into the weekend, looks dry, that's good. >> some sunshine as well in the forecast. today has been great. we're still a little below normal with the temperatures, but this is livable i think. this isn't bad and temperatures this weekend pretty much where we have been today, just in time for your accuweather forecast. we'll start at the big three airports now, temperature at
11:16pm
national 45, dulles 40 and 41 for bwi marshall. let's check on some of these numbers. the temperature is dropping like a rock in frederick down to 28 degrees now, manassas 30 degrees, culpeper 34. temperatures are loving right around freezing for winchester and martinsburg. so where these skies are clear and this wind has dropped off tonight the temperatures are really getting cool. annapolis no doubt under the influence of the bay a little bit at 46 degrees. in the city we're under the influence of the city and meet island effect. that keeps our -- heat island effect. that keeps our temperature up for a while. outside the beltway in those suburbs and communities temperatures are really dropping. 37 tonight and 28 to 33 degrees for the suburbs. frederick is already at 28. i suspect frederick will be a little colder. winds will be light under these fair skies, too. next couple days going into the weekend not bad, 54 tomorrow. it looks like tomorrow is
11:17pm
pretty much a carbon copy of what we had today. we get into sunday, i think a few more clouds, there's going to be plenty of sunshine, dry and nice. if we do get a few more clouds sunday that, temperature might be just a degree cooler. so again pretty much the same thing for both days. we have clear skies in place now, light winds, all the moisture and cloud cover offshore. a couple clouds are hugging the jersey shore there but again dry. as you go back west all the way back into the central plains, it is gorgeous under a big area of high pressure. i don't foresee any problems sneaking in for the weekend. next week we'll have kind of a coastal storm that's trying to get its act together that might try to bring us more clouds monday and tuesday the way it look now. so chilly overnight tonight. notice the numbers in the suburbs down to the upper 20s, lower 30s. i can tell you in the suburbs temperatures will be right at
11:18pm
freezing and below. fredericksburg right around 34 degrees or so. tomorrow not bad. we'll go 51 in town, a little cooler back out west, fredericksburg 53 degrees or so and then by the bay temperatures will be in the upper 40s. it's a nice weekend. i guess you could say it's a little on the cool side, about we've had worse. sunshine to start, sunshine at noon, sunshine by late afternoon tomorrow. so we're looking good and again temperatures tomorrow will be up into the lower to mid-50s. that's pretty much where we'll stay the next several days. i think as we look at the fox 5 accuweather seven-day forecast, 52 monday, cooler, mostly cloudy. that will be the trend monday, mostly cloudy tuesday, but at this point it still looks like it's dry. we don't have any rain in the seven-day forecast. on wednesday a lot of folks traveling, just some cloud but dry, 55 degrees for a high. right now thanksgiving really looking good with temperatures mid- to upper 50s and loads of sunshine.
11:19pm
that's the way it looks now. we hope that forecast holds for the holiday. lindsay murphy is in with sports coming up. no bye week for the redskins this weekend. she's also talking about some maryland basketball. this is the verizon 4g lte sports desk with lindsay murphy. >> the maryland basketball team wrapped up the barclays center classic tonight as they hosted liu brooklyn. let's say the terps might have had the height advantage, six players over 6' 7, liu brooklyn just one. that was of the difference in this one. mark turgeon in his second season at maryland. early in the game the terps off and running after a brooklyn miss. if it is dez well -- it is dez wells who finishes it off. terps now struggling thanks to 15 turnovers. garner misses. thompson does not. brooklyn within three. however, they were down nine at the half. 2nd half james padgett and alex
11:20pm
len the s.w.a.t. team. his reward? the slam down the lane, the pullup for show. he finishes with 18. the terps with a 15-point lead and control the game the rest of the way. off the turnover here the freshman seth allen alone for the flush. he would score a team high 19. the terps improve to 2-1 with a 91-74 win over liu brooklyn. the wizards held practice today. this team still can't find their magic. for the second straight near they are the only nba team without a win. 0-7 is their record. tomorrow is their next chance. if they lose to the utah jazz, 0-8 would match the worst start in franchise history, but you can't say they vent been competitive. four of six -- haven't been competitive, four of seven games decided by six points or less. >> we're a tough group of guys. we're not going to give up. a lot of the games we've been right there in the games. we're fighting. we're going to compete. we get down but continue to fight to get back in the guy. just a little hump we need to
11:21pm
get over to take us over to get us a win. >> there's tomorrow. d.c. united lost to the houston dynamo sun, 3-1 in the first leg of the -- sunday 3-1 in the first leg of the eastern conference finals. this sunday in order to advance they must score two goals, maybe more in houston scores. if they can do that, overtime would follow to decide who advances to the championships. >> we need to score goals. so there is a little bit of a different mindset going into this game, but it's still a soccer game and we are still confident in our ability to win games by two goals at home. we've done it before. on the other side the redskins have two of their key offseason acquisitions back for sunday's showdown with the eagles, details after the break.
11:22pm
11:23pm

11:25pm
four, but reinjured the game. garcon door a ligament in his right foot in a season opener and has been in pain ever since, but he says he's ready and so is his qb. >> brings a little joy to get back on the field and knowing that you're not 100% isn't as happy as i want to be, but trying to take the positive out of it and being out there and try and give my team some energy to play forward and make this run. >> it will be good to have him back. he looked good. like i told him, we're going to have many great games together. so we might as well go ahead and start it now. >> the skins and eagles sunday at 1:00. that's a wrap on sports, but emergency will be right back. good night. -- but the news edge will be right back. good night. where others fail, droid powers through.
